GBOGFY at Motoblot I had an interesting and fun time promoting my book at Motoblot last…
One evening, over a decade ago, we were just chatting with some friends in our kitchen…
This particular aspect of my book was the most difficult to try and write accurately, fairly and objectively, by far. Especially that last adjective. I believe a lot of men share that complicated relationship with their dads, which is why it’s so relatable, of course.
Often when I want to determine whether something is possible or, better yet, plausible, I set out to find real life examples of someone achieving it. It can be anything, really and I often end up discovering some really interesting person who has set out to do either exactly what I am attempting or something similar or at least something of interest.
I have to go back to the “lived experience” concept and writing about things that are real, thing that happened and that you actually experienced. “Relatable” is the key and it is also why I don’t believe that AI is just going to take over and replace everything and everyone.
Semantics, right? I suppose, to a degree, you could say so. I tend to think of life experience as the wrinkles around my eyes and mouth, the lines in my face. Lived experience is more like the scars and the indelible memories of life-altering events.
The one constant is probably that it is a slow process involving being self-critical and patient with one’s self at the same time. You first need to shine a light on that one thing, the one that is most apparent in your life at the moment and recognize it. You have to then accept that it is a flaw and that it is one you want to address.
Without actually DOING things, we are relying on theory, speculation and pure academics. There are a number of things about actually experiencing things for yourself that carry immense value.
Think for just a minute about all of the decisions that led you to where you are right now. At least try to; there’s no way most of us will be able to recall every single one of them. But attempting to do so lends a certain amount of perspective.
